Inleiding/Introduction
a TCM perspective to sleep and dreams
This lecture aims to explore the physiology and pathology of sleep and dreams from the perspective of neuroscience and its connection with Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Sleep problems are becoming a global epidemic, affecting up to 45% of the world's population and threatening their health and quality of life. Getting a good quality sleep is crucial for your overall health and well-being. However, in today's world, people tend to neglect the importance of sleep.
Studies have shown that people with insomnia suffer from more symptoms of anxiety and depression than those who don't have insomnia. Getting enough good quality sleep can protect your physical and mental health, improve your quality of life, and ensure personal safety. Getting good quality and quantity of sleep is one of the keys to aging well, improving the odds of physical, cognitive, and emotional health.
Dreams are an essential aspect of sleep, and they account for one-fifth of our sleep time. Despite their importance, the significance of dreams is still unknown and is a subject of vivid discussion among scientists. Therefore, exploring Onirology, the science that studies dreams, can help TCM practitioners understand the significance of dreams and its impact on our health.
